The Bow River downstream of Calgary is well known as one of the premier trout fisheries in the world. The 40 miles of river between Calgary and the hamlet of Carseland is home to wild rainbow and brown trout, some of which grow to immense proportions!
What truly sets the Bow apart from other world class fisheries is the average size of its trout. Fish in the sixteen to eighteen inch range are common, while fish over the twenty inch mark are caught more days than not. Fish over twenty four inches are a distinct possibility, with trout landed every year approaching the legendary thirty inch mark.
The Bow is blessed with some of the best dry fly activity there is, with amazing Stonefly hatches, intense Caddis hatches, as well as consistent and predictable mayfly hatches. Our guides specialize in dry fly fishing! If the fish are not rising (which is uncommon), the versatile angler and guide will switch to streamer or nymph fishing, which is usually very consistent.
The Lower Bow River is open to fishing year round, but the best fishing typically occurs after spring runoff. Runoff usually occurs in late May and early June, lasting up to a couple of weeks, depending on the snow pack in each year. In a normal year the Bow will be in good fishing condition by late June or early July. The best fishing takes place in the months of July, August, September and early October.
