Bow River Guided Trips
We offer both single day trips and multi-day packages, including lodging. We can accommodate both private and corporate trips. Everyone can experience the amazing fishing offered by the Bow River. All of our guides are knowledgeable and professional, with an intimate understanding of this magnificent fishery.
On each morning of your trip, your guide will meet you at Country Pleasures, or, by prior arrangement, pick you up and bring you to the shop for all necessary licences, flies, terminal tackle, etc. From the shop you will go to the river, where you will rig up for fishing while the guide launches the drift boat. You will then float a stretch of the beautiful Bow River, receiving guiding and instruction throughout the day. Your guide will provide a shore lunch and beverages during the day and will deliver you back to the shop or your place of residence at the end of the day. A typical day starts at 9:00 a.m. and may extend until dark, which occurs in Calgary in the summer around 10:00 p.m. Your day can be tailored to suit your desires.
We have lived in Calgary and fished the river since the 70's and know it well. In fact, as the oldest fly fishing specialty shop in Alberta, we are confident that nobody knows the Bow better than we do. We can attend to all the details of your trip to fish the Bow. Please see our rates below and contact us for booking now.
The Bow River downstream from the City of Calgary is well known as one of the premier blue ribbon trout streams in the world. The forty miles of river Between Calgary and the hamlet of Carseland is home to wild rainbow and brown trout, some of which are of very large size. The river has somewhat limited access to the pedestrian angler and it is often floated to get access to waters that cannot be reached by crossing private lands.
What sets the Bow apart from other quality fisheries is the large average size of the fish it produces. Fish in the sixteen to eighteen inch range are commonplace on the Bow. It is an unusual day when an experienced angler does not hook a fish in excess of twenty inches. These large fish can be taken on a variety of flyfishing methods. Under the right conditions heavy caddis and mayfly hatches will bring the large fish to the surface and the dry fly fishing can be spectacular. If the fish are not rising, the versatile angler will switch to nymph or streamer fishing, which can be very consistent.
The Bow River is open to fishing year round, but the best fishing occurs after spring runoff of the snowmelt from the mountains. Runoff usually occurs in late May and early June, lasting up to a couple of weeks, depending on the snow pack in each year. In a normal year the Bow will be in good fishing condition by late June or early July. The best fishing takes place in the months of July, August, September and early October.
